🎂 Red Velvet Cake Recipe (Classic American Style)
🍰 Ingredients for the Cake:
Dry Ingredients:
2½ cups all-purpose flour
1½ cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients:
1½ cups vegetable oil (neutral flavor)
1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tablespoon vinegar, let sit for 5 minutes)
2 large eggs (room temperature)
2 tablespoons red food coloring
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon white vinegar
🧁 Ingredients for the Cream Cheese Frosting:
8 oz (225g) cream cheese (softened)
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter (softened)
2–3 cups powdered sugar (adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
🥣 Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.
3. Mix Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until well combined.
4. Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
5. Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
6. Cool: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and let them cool completely on wire racks.
7. Prepare Frosting: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until fluffy. Mix in the vanilla extract.
8. Assemble Cake: Once the cakes are completely cool, spread a layer of frosting on top of one cake layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake.
